EIFFEL revealing the role of GEOSS at the GEO WEEK 2022

On the 1st of November, EIFFEL partner NOA representing Pilot Sustainable Urban Development had a constructive participation at the GEO WEEK 2022  in Accra, Ghana at the Side Event on Earth Observation and urban resilience “GEO Initiatives and European Projects: Synergies for Urban Resilience” organized by Project Harmonia.

Dr Eleni Athanassopoulou successfully presented EIFFEL’s scope of work focusing on projects’ activities providing solutions on urban scale, while discussing about the challenges faced by the pilot cities of the project based in Athens.

The Panel Discussion facilitated an exchange on challenges and needs in regards to urban resilience in terms of sustainability, adaptation and mitigation. The dependence of urban resilience on various components, mostly socio-economic, was highlighted during the discussion, while the current wealth of -Earth Observation powered- datasets and tools was acknowledged. However, communication effort was considered necessary to effectively reach cities and planners in vast numbers, as well as to match challenges with EO solutions. In the Panel Discussion capacity building, at the city level, was also deemed necessary to truly enable the potential of this wealth and pave the way for institutionalizing EO in pragmatic city conditions.

NOA was able to interact with more than 50 members from research, academia, public and national authorities, space institutes and international organizations enhancing project collaboration through potential synergies for urban resilience.
