The groundbreaking solar “cadaster” application estimates the rooftop photovoltaic energy potential for the city of Athens in Greece.
It deploys a sophisticated three-dimensional ray tracing and shadow casting by using fast radiative transfer models, advanced graphic creation platforms and cloud supercomputing in conjunction with Earth Observation data sources. The technical development was implemented in historical and real-time operating modes in order to be exploited by urban planners and by electricity distribution system operators for efficient incorporation of the produced energy into the smart grids.
Within the framework of EIFFEL project, one of the main objectives of the Sustainable Urban Development pilot is to increase in renewables penetration to >35% by 2030 (now 18%).
